3 lamps to test / NAO PETZL, RUNNER SILVA and H7 LED LENSER

We’re going to start comparing the lighting of each model, gross, opening 100% of the focal and at full power, just to get a feel “dry”.

In the light of this first test of basic interior, we can already see clear differences. When some beams are focused towards one goal, the center, others also dispatchent light on the periphery with more or less intensity. We will see that on the field, the side visibility is important, especially downhill when the ground is very uneven, but also for other less technical reasons perhaps more subjective but proven in the field.
Note a central dark area on the LED LENSER and a periphery that covered less for models Petzl and SILVA
And here is the same but in the forest in the dark night with the same lighting conditions max

A lighting “Nature provided” powerful and closer to the trailer for the SILVA RUNNER but limited in depth. TheNAO (355 Lumens) and the LED LENSER (180 Lumens) have more lighting versatility but more clearly to the NAO, either in depth or lateral vision and better color reproduction and contrast .

We will describe one by one the three lamps tested under the same conditions at night in clear weather and rain with a conclusion on our preference at end of article.

 H7 De Led Lenser

Here the manufacturer’s specifications

  • Advanced Focus System
  • Battery life: 85 hours
  • Luminous flux: 180 lumens
  • Weight: 117 grams (with 3 LR3)
  • Reach Beam: 140 meters

Our opinion: The LED LENSER H7 is a sleek and lightweight enough so it’s an interesting product for people who seek the lightness of movement without frills. Its price, too light, only 45 € in fact another asset of weight!
Note that the H7 R (75 €) is the same model as the H7 but rechargeable , which is a more convenient and environmentally friendly.
The comfort side LED LENSER H7 is above the lot she suffers no pressio ns pop on the forehead which is especially comfortable for long nocturnal use. It is not the same for the pivoting head (yet new lamp) which, when sufficiently strong impacts (down), tends to change every single angle, which is more inconvenient and very encouraging over time .

The small sealing plate fixed by 4 screws does not inspire us 100% confidence when the water resistance over long periods of exposure to cold, rain, snow and condensation. Note an overall finished look below the tested brands that are SILVA and Petzl, a lamp that is not very strong at first.

brands that are SILVA and Petzl, a lamp that is not very strong at first.
The accuracy of the light can be modulated at will through an adjustable drag and below the lamp. A system that speaks to all my of because it is used as a camera zoom is the Advanced Focus System .
Ingenious and practical system for illuminating a distant area precisely when one seeks his way or conversely to have a more global view. Easy wheel of use if one does not wear gloves and sticks in hands … Note that a very deep view is that little use to trailers which have no use to enlighten tops trees or 100m before being focused on 20 to 30 meters in front of them, or even a little less in case of extreme fatigue.

The intensity can be adjusted from 20 lumens to 180 lumens one with a potentiometer placed dan s battery compartment, again a good idea except that it adds a manipulation, which is however very bare hands. ..the trailer it be lazy? We say rather pragmatic and reluctant to bother with unnecessary gestures after several hours to run in any weather.
In terms of ease of use so we blame too manipulations in this lamp H7 in use trail or biking, while for hiking or mountain skiing that will satisfy H7 practitioners.

Light side
The H7 is the only 3 lamps to provide light projection as well Cut halo. If we were amazed by the power of this light indoors test with 180 Lumens “only”, we were not impressed with the re-transcription of this power on the ground.
Although this lamp illuminates really well depth is even better on this aspect, the quality of hand beam is not exceptional with a return of average colors but especially with the presence of a dark area which wastes H7 efficiency lighting it promised. By broadening the focus this gray area becomes larger causing the appearance of several circles that troubles some vision. We already divined the fine on the inner picture but also the one shown against taking on a rock.If this aspect is not handicap on a light background as this rock, in the undergrowth of mixed background stones / mud, moreover downhill or the landscape scrolls faster and when the accuracy of laying the foot premium, c is a little embarrassing.
Another more subjective aspect that one. For racing experience throughout the course with endless nights as in adventure raids and / or trails, boredom quickly becomes an aggravating factor in the performance and morale. The round beam of Led Lenser does not offer this option to “distract” the perks of the way. Then installs a kind of torpor somewhat omnibulente fixed on a white round haunting, besides a beam too narrow width does not bring you the feedback of land needed when moving quickly and can, in some cases you to miss an intersection, which happened several times during this test.
(English Video clip)

Highlight of the Led Lenser

-Comfort on the head, lightness, quality / price ratio, depth of the beam through the zoom helpful in some cases trail. Long battery lighting (most efficient lamps tested 3) all obviously depending on the batteries used. 5 year warranty

Weakness of Led Lenser long battery -A course but against-balance with a quasi-obligation to be constantly up to see really clear where power ultimately difficulty setting autonomy. Finishing a little “light”, all relative strength and tightness, average reliability of the serrated swivel head, dark area on the center, reduced vision on the sides, reduced manipulation with gloves and sticks.

We suggest this lamp for small budgets and irregular use.

Rechargeable Lithium Battery ion 2300 mAh, with an estimated life of 300 cycles (beyond the capacity of the rechargeable battery is about 30% lower than its initial capacity).
Price: 112 € to 125 €

Our opinion: This is a lamp for his first prototype, there 3 years until today and its large-scale commercialization, revolutionizing the night lighting and changing nightlife traileurs and ultra trail runners.
A weight 187grammes making it the heaviest 3 for an intermediate price between H7 and RUNNER. View 112 € on the net instead of € 125 base price.
Two records with a quick start very convenient for the impatient!

The NAO PETZL is the first headlamp to offer technology REACTIVE LIGHTING :

A light sensor located above the measurement lamps and lighting adapts depending on the brightness outside, a significant freedom for the hands and head. A lamp that takes the lead and which adapts itself: it was enough to seduce traileurs “lazy” (see above).
The graph below shows the adaptability of the lamp Nao to conserve energy for more autonomy while ensuring adequate lighting. Note that you can block out the light if you prefer to have a whole same time lighting (cancellation system REACTIVE LIGHTING ) through a modular switch knob easy to handle with gloves, less with sticks!
Personally intermediate level of lighting is one we used most often which helps preserve the battery while keeping a more than satisfactory level of lighting.
Another advantage: you can also customize your lighting profiles (10 levels lighting of 4 profiles), create and customize new lighting levels and other free download options on www.petzl.com/OS . So far only the watches offered this feature!

Tip from Sébastien Chaigneaux  : You want to keep the LIGHTING REACTIVE but do not burn your battery?Just down the pivoting head a notch and you will earn at least an hour of lighting over the entire duration without losing quality lighting.
We will add that run traileurs platoon enlightened, you will save your energy, but hush do not tell your neighbor race!

Below is the graph showing the responsiveness and adaptability of the lamp to maintain the autonomy

Proper comfort on the head, easy to tighten and loosen by cords system and a buckle. The NAO stays in place in the downhill and also supports good to be installed on a hood for inclement weather. The NAO fits onto most sports helmets (mountain biking, mountain helmet, climbing and caving …).

Light PETZL
If indoor lighting is not the most impressive (see top of page) on the 3 tested lamps, however the field is another story. You want to run night and day understand in the same lighting conditions? Nao will bring a positive response in more colors. The sharpness is stirring and adjusting the lighting is very responsive making it an ally for all sorts of night activities where the traveling speed can be significant (adventure racing, mountain biking …).

Two small flat to note : in case of thick fog and damp where the NAO loses some pedals and is deceived by the reflection of moisture droplets and goes into low power. Just to ward off this block light through the dial to full power and voila.
Then a little problem with the reactive lighting of the Nao, when one approaches reflective markings Nao almost completely cut and each time a cut of almost one second without light, not overwhelming but it tires the eyes. Ditto when a runner who wears clothing with reflective tape or part precedes you, the lamp goes crazy and starts to flash stromboscope way and it’s not super nice.
Whether deep or close you’ll see and be seen well. Only one can observe a central density of the beam when it looks up for a vision in depth but without the appearance of halo as with Led lenser H7 and peripheral vision is very exceptional.
The finish is also very powerful, wearing this lamp in the rain “eyes closed” due to IP X4
* IPx4 = protection against splashes and spray water.
>>> Read more about the IP initials on it

Tip: When water gets inside of a lamp, the lamp should be dried, batteries changed and contacts should be inspected

In smaller more NAO is noted :

  • NAO belt kit optional rechargeable battery for deportation at the waist, to reduce the weight on the head, or to keep the battery pack warm in winter
  • System of double tightening: elastic removable front to avoid distension effects and clamping system with adjustable thread behind and with an eye to be sure to have a specific and identical clamping

The brand SILVA it’s 80 years of experience in the field of lighting for outdoor sports! The Swedish brand is primarily specialized in products for orientation and Nordic skiing. I quote “creators SILVA, orienteering enthusiasts, develop and produce products in the activities of the OUTDOOR” . (Video clip … in Swedish)

We had high expectations of this RUNNER home Silva , with 550 Lumens here one feels expertise SILVA when talking headlight lamps for Nordic skiing or outdoor sports in Scandinavian forests.
In test full power / autonomy (see above file photo), the RUNNER is a hair more durable than the NAO , but worse than the H7 . A high price between € 179 and € 199 which makes it a product reserved for those who can and want to invest in the night lighting. The price is however not justified in regard to its lowest described performance.

Comfort, the RUNNER good fit on the head thanks to a fine slip inner tape. But we can feel a little pressure on

  • the forehead due to a plastic plate sitting a little too small. If discomfort is minor stopped for short distances or on a headband / cap, it quickly becomes more important for long distances; it will then find the tightness of the headband headband. Pretty impressive battery that can be installed on the draw band at the back of the skull but it does not help to find more comfort, rather it even tends to move much downhill and dragging it all around the bottom. There is mentioned a real trail disadvantage. This defect can be hidden if you choose the optional extender cable (supplied with lamp) and the storage battery in the backpack, a good alternative for those that carry system do not mind.
The on / off button is convenient to reach, even with gloves. RUNNER light side the lack of lighting and depth is behind the NAO and H7 on this aspect; by cons to 4 or 5 meters it is very powerful, even the best in this register: it’s good because it’s about the lighting distance that is required of a headlamp (especially at this price point ) when the path is technical underfoot and the speed scrolls down. By cons through lighting against barely provide enough light to be comfortable, we say that 550 Lumens is concentrated on full power. Nao takes over this. A nonexistent zoom which somewhat limits the prospects for progressive lighting, especially when compared to the REACTIVE LIGHTING Petzl or the focus of the H7. Oddly diode which tends to really heat up to full power. Where we were a little disappointed with the RUNNER, it is in terms of wet fog in near vision, where lighting was certainly better than the H7 but a real tone en- below the NAO. It required a front designed in Scandinavia, land of lakes and weather, a lamp over any terrain. We are however reassured to know that the rain does not impress this lamp with a seal at the top and a protection factor IPx6 = protection against water packets or powerful jets for only IPx4 for the NAO. >>> Read more about the IP initials on it Little morerechargeable battery attachable to the headband, belt or put in a pocket
  • extender cable
  • hyper practices connected accessories

Conclusion
In the headlamps sector, war technology to attract trailers is declared! A powerhouse for maximum brightness on the roads by dark night. In the ray of new technologies and innovation palm is up to the experienced French firm PETZL for the NAO  with his REACTIVE LIGHTING and its price relatively “reasonable” in view of the technology involved and that we believe in a head ahead of their opponents in order: the Silva RUNNER andH7 LED lenser . We can not advise you properly invest without spending hundreds of euros in buying a headlamp if you practice the e trail and ultra long distances. >> Find all our tests on this link trail
